Barack Obama was the 44th president of the United States. He was the first African American to be elected to the presidency, and he served two terms in office from 2009 to 2017.
Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1961. His father was a Kenyan economist, and his mother was a white American anthropologist. Obama's parents divorced when he was two years old, and he was raised by his mother and her parents.

Obama attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School. After graduating from law school, he worked as a community organizer in Chicago. In 1996, he was elected to the Illinois State Senate. He served in the state senate for eight years, and in 2004, he was elected to the U.S. Senate.
