On May 1, 1915, three days after the First Battle of Krithia, Turkish forces launched a counterattack at the Battle of Eski Hissarlik during World War 1.

Battle of Eski Hissarlik

The counterattack was led by Liman von Sanders, the German commander of Turkish forces on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The Battle

The Turkish attack began at 10:00 p.m. with a brief artillery bombardment. The Allies were expecting the attack and were prepared for it.

The Turkish infantry was cut down as they advanced across open ground in waves.

The British and French forces held their positions and repulsed the Turkish attack. The Turks suffered heavy casualties, with over 2,000 killed or wounded. The Allies suffered fewer casualties, with about 1,000 killed or wounded.

The Turkish counterattack failed to achieve its objective of pushing the Allies back into the sea, but it did show that they were going to be tough to push off their land.

The Allies still had a desire to take back Constantinople after it fell at the fall of the Byzantine Empire.
