Cedar Creek Mine Ride - Cedar Point's Longest Roller Coaster

Published: Dec 1, 2021 · Modified: Nov 2, 2023 by Russell Yost · This post may contain affiliate links ·

The Cedar Creek Mine Ride roller coaster opened in 1969 as a centerpiece of the newly opened Frontier Town.

The concept of the ride was that of a runaway train. It is the second oldest roller coaster at Cedar Point and one of the longest rides.

Compared to modern Roller Coasters, the Mine Ride doesn’t give much of a thrill but is a great ride to break someone in on the roller coaster experience.

History

Following the success of Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland, which opened in 1959, the tubular steel track design pioneered by Arrow Development was in high demand at other amusement parks around the world.

Arrow developed a runaway mine train concept that would be used in many of its first roller coasters. Among them was the Cedar Creek Mine Ride at Cedar Point, which opened on May 24, 1969, as the centerpiece for the new Frontier town section of the park.

It is the second oldest roller coaster at Cedar Point and has given over 62 million rides since its debut.

In 2019, Cedar Creek Mine Ride celebrated its 50th anniversary. The attraction received some changes, including a new station soundtrack, special effects in the first tunnel, and mineshaft scenery in the queue

Cedar Creek Mine Ride is a multi-lift hill roller coaster that features short dips and turns throughout a lightly wooded area and over a lagoon.

The ride starts by entering a mine building, which functions as the track transfer and housing for additional trains, and then up the first lift hill. At the top of the hill, riders experience a very short drop followed by several turns taking place high off the ground until a larger drop over a lagoon.

After passing over the lagoon, riders enter into a helix and then onto the second lift hill. After the second lift, riders again experience a short dip along with some turns raised off the ground.

The end of the ride features a double helix before entering the station.

Conclusion

The Cedar Creek Mine Ride roller coaster is a walk-on ride. I personally use the ride as a way to dry off from Snake River Falls, Thunder Canyon, or Shoot The Rapids.

While the ride has been surpassed by the steel giants that make up the Cedar Point skyline, the ride is a relaxing ride to end the night.

Also, as stated before, the Mine Ride is a great ride to break in a child or someone who is not familiar with other, faster rides in the park.
