List of The Lake Erie Islands

Published: Dec 2, 2021 · Modified: Nov 1, 2023 by Russell Yost · This post may contain affiliate links ·

The Lake Erie Islands are the second most popular tourist destination in Sandusky Ohio, and a place where many of the locals go to escape work and party.

While many people head to the islands to party it up, there is more there than a bunch of booze. The islands have some of the best wine in the area, great island cuisine, attractions for kids, and historic monuments.

There really is something for everyone.

Here is a quick list and description of some of the well-known Lake Erie Islands. Only a couple are popular tourist destinations:

South Bass Island: The home to the popular island destination, Put-in-bay, South Bass Island is the most visited island in Lake Erie. It is home to Perry’s Monument (built in memory of the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812) and a killer party scene.

Kelley’s Island: Another popular destination for island hoppers. Kelley’s Island is the largest island in the local Ohio cluster and is home to some excellent food, bars, and glacial grooves.

Johnson’s Island: This historic island is a Civil War landmark. It was used as a Union prison for Confederate officers. Now, there is a Confederate cemetery alongside a bunch of private property. The island has turned into a haven for summer homes of rich folks.

Rattlesnake Island: A mysterious island located next to South Bass Island. Rattlesnake is privately owned and has a large resort located on it. It is not open to the public, and if boaters get too close to the island, they will be greeted by armed security that will escort them off Rattlesnake waters.

Green Island: Another island that is not open to the public and is used as a wildlife refuge.

Middle Bass Island: Less crowded than put-in-bay, Middle Bass is open to the public but not a hot tourist destination. It is serviced by the Miller Boat Line and does have a nice resort on it. Some folks use Middle Bass as a cheaper way to enjoy Put-in-Bay.

North Bass Island: Small and unincorporated, North Bass is home to 13 permanent residents and a large vineyard. The government owns much of the property on North Bass, which keeps it from being commercially developed.

Pelee Island: Pelee is actually located across the Canadian border and is the largest island in Lake Erie. It is commercially developed with an exciting nightlife, excellent winery, and great grub.
