Mnemosyne, the Greek goddess of memory and a Titan. She was the daughter of Uranus and Gaea and a lover of Zeus. Zeus slept with Mnemosyne for nine consecutive days, eventually leading to the birth of the nine Muses:
- Calliope (epic poetry)
- Clio (history)
- Euterpe (music)
- Erato (lyric poetry)
- Melpomene (tragedy)
- Polyhymnia (hymns)
- Terpsichore (dance)
- Thalia (comedy)
- Urania (astronomy)
Mnemosyne also presided over a pool in Hades.
Mnemosyne was also a goddess of time. She represented the rote memorization required to preserve the stories of history and the sagas of myth before the introduction of writing.
