North Bass Island History - A Wildlife Refuge and Oasis

Published: Dec 3, 2021 · Modified: Nov 1, 2023 by Russell Yost · This post may contain affiliate links ·

North Bass Island is part of Ottawa County and Put-in-Bay Township. It is a small, unincorporated community that has a small airstrip and two dozen permanent residents.

North Bass Island

Unlike South Bass Island and, to some extent, Middle Bass Island, it is not commercialized and does not have any resort or hotel available.

The state of Ohio purchased 589 acres to preserve it from being commercially developed and operates it as a North Bass Island State Park.

Historically, North Bass Island was used as a vineyard, and today it is used as a wildlife refuge. There is one home on the island that can be rented. It is for those who enjoy the wildlife, water, and quiet atmosphere.

Here is what the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says about the Island:

A primitive getaway for Lake Erie island enthusiasts, the secluded and undeveloped North Bass Island is only accessible by private boat, charter, or aircraft. In spring and fall, North Bass provides an important stop-over for migratory songbirds. Located on the south end of the island, the park offers moors for boaters, fishing, and wildlife watching. Fishing and hunting are permitted in public areas of the island.
