There are so many websites to choose from, and it can be overwhelming. I wanted to make that easier for you, so I compiled a list of my Top 100 History Websites and divided them into categories so it would be easier to find the right time period.
Age of Exploration
- Famous-Explorers.org - One of the most in-depth resources on the web that covers anything pertaining to explorers. They cover everyone from the Vikings to Neil Armstrong and everything in between.
- AllAboutExplorers.com - All About Explorers has a nice list of biographies on the more notable explorers that students study in their history classes. They also add an interesting twist to their website with Treasure Hunts that allow the students to hunt for information regarding the explorer.
- AmericanJourneys,org - This is a gold mine for primary sources related to the early exploration of America.
- ThePirateKing.com - Rob Ossian's Pirate Cove covers everything about piracy. This includes biographies of explorers and pirates, weapons of pirates, their ships, modern movies, terminology, and so much more. It is easily the best resource for pirates on the web.
- Aztec-History.com - An exhaustive look at the history of the Aztecs and their rise and fall in Western Civilization.
- SpanishWars.net - Covers all of the military actions taken by the Spanish before and after discovering the New World.
Colonial America
- HistoricJamestowne.org - The official site of the Jamestown colony. While the website is set up to introduce you to the colony of Jamestown and invite you to come and visit the tourist destination, it is also loaded with excellent information. It details the archaeology, genealogy, history, and resources for educators.
- PilgrimHallMuseum.org - All things Pilgrims. This museum is dedicated to Plymouth Plantation and the settlers that resided there. It has a detailed history of Plymouth, including its founding, key figures, artifacts, King Phillips War, and its merger with the larger Massachusetts Bay Colony.
- MayflowerHistory.com - Run by Caleb Johnson, who has been studying the history of the Mayflower for over 25 years. There is a lot of excellent information about the history of the Mayflower, its passengers, genealogy, and primary sources.
- Massachusetts Historical Society - The best genealogical website that tackles early Colonial America on the web.

- Journal of the American Revolution - The Best Website on the Web dealing with the American Revolution. This is a scholarly website, and the articles have been written by authorities on the topic.
- American Revolution National Parks - The official website of the American Revolution National Parks.
- Library Of Congress Maps of the Revolution - These are historic maps of the American Revolution time period.
- West Point Tactical Maps of the Battles - Detailed maps of the Battles of the Revolution
- Spy Letters of the American Revolution - Deals with espionage that took place during the Revolution
- National Archives - Government records of the American Revolution
