Moses Fletcher arrived in Plymouth aboard the Mayflower alone and died that first winter.
William Bradford mentioned his death in his memoirs:
Moyses Fletcher, Thomas Williams, Digerie Preist, John Goodman, Edmond Margeson, Richard Britterige, Richard Clarke. All these dyed sones after their arrival, in the general sicknes that befell But Digerie Preist had his wife and children sent hither afterwards, she being Mr. (John) Allerton's sister. But the rest left no posterity here.
Early Life
There is little known about Fletcher's early life. There are no records of his parents, but it can be assumed that he was born around 1564 in Kent, England. This date is just a guess, but should be close since we do know when he was married and the birth of his children.
While living in England, he and his wife, Mary Evans, had ten children. It is uncertain what year she passed away, but it would have been sometime between 1609 - 1613. 1609 marked the birth of their last child, and in 1613 Moses remarried.
After being excommunicated three times, he moved from England to Leiden, Holland, with other Separatists.
During this time, he met his second wife, Sarah Denby, who was also widowed. The two married on December 21, 1613. There is no record of the two having any children together.
Children
Moses Fletcher had ten children, with only a handful surviving until adulthood. During this time, there was a high rate of infant mortality. His last child with his first wife died, and he was buried shortly before he left for Holland.
At the time of his crossing, three of his children had married and had begun raising their families. This is most likely the reason that none of them crossed with him despite that they all lived in Leiden.
